PLAN NOW FOR YEAR-ROUND COLOR IN YOUR GARDEN

PLAN NOW FOR YEAR-ROUND COLOR IN YOUR GARDEN

PLAN NOW FOR YEAR-ROUND COLOR IN YOUR GARDEN

Many homeowners think garden flowers and landscape color is only for spring and summer. The truth is, plants are capable of flowering (or at least showing color) all year. It’s just a matter of choosing the right plants.

Colorful bushes and trees are of course nice, but if you want to create what some call “horticultural theater,” you need plants with pizzazz.

Even during our desert winters, there are plants like the Firecracker Penstemon and Angelita Daisy that will provide excellent wildflower combination. The brilliant red, hummingbird-attracting flowers of the Arizona native Penstemon against the yellow flowers of the Angelita Daisy provide a stunning contrast.

In short, there are lots of options — no matter your climate.

The key is to plan for your winter color now. You need to not only consult your local nursery to determine what vibrant varieties will thrive during the off-season, but you also need to get those plants in the ground now so they have time to establish themselves before weather sets in.

Also, be sure to keep the plants free of leaves during the fall so they don’t get smothered.
